The Craft of Writing 3 - Dramatic Dialogue
The
Deadline for this Course has now Passed
A one-day course for just 6 students, led by Greg Mosse, from 11h00 to 17h30 on Saturday 13 October 2007, at West Dean College in West Sussex.
Course description
Dialogue needs to be fluent – readable. But real speech is rarely
fluent or readable when written down verbatim. How should a writer approach
this paradox? What techniques are there for judging the success of a
passage of dialogue? How often must one say 'he said' and 'she replied'?
This intensive one-day workshop is designed to answer these questions
with a small group of students, working individually and collaboratively.
It is a sequence of three practical sessions:
Session 1
Examples of successful dialogue in different styles; building a conversation line by line; adding a character to an existing dialogue.
Sessions 2
Dialogue for radio; dialogue for film; radio and film effects on the page.
Session 3
Hiding the clue; longer speeches; set-piece scenes.
