A weekend residential course for up to 18 students, led by Greg Mosse and Jason Goodwin.

Jason studied history at Cambridge. An award-wining travel writer, his publications include The Gunpowder Gardens – travels in China and India in search of tea (1990), On Foot to the Golden Horn (1995) and Lords of the Horizons (1999). Jason’s detective story The Janissary Tree was published by Faber in 2006.

The course runs from 18h30 on Friday 22 June to 15h30 on Sunday 24 June 2007, West Dean College in West Sussex.

Course description
This is a practical course for writers of all abilities who find inspiration in travel and its historical and cultural significance. It analyses the work of successful authors – intrepid, sensitive, learned, fun – and shows participants effective techniques for creating lively, vivid scripts in a relaxed atmosphere.

There are eight taught sessions of between 75 and 90 minutes each, plus private writing time. The sessions include:

  • Successful styles and successful authors
  • How to characterise the people you meet on your travels
  • Switching between the story and the history
  • Foolhardy, admirable, scary authors
  • Physical description and geographical detail …

as well as question and answer time and issues of professional development.
